Instructions to install a minimal version of fedora and essential apps.

Initial Install

  1. Download the Fedora everything iso and flash it to a USB drive
  2. Go through ISO setup
  3. Select "Fedora Custom Operating System"
    1. Common NetworkManager Submodules
    2. Standard
    3. C Development Tools and Libraries
    4. Container Manger
    5. Development Tools
    6. Editors
    7. Sound and Video
    8. Finish install

Installing Apps

Simple dnf Apps

sudo dnf install niri firefox nvim cmake python3-pip gh obs-studio stow cargo cava picard chromaprint-tools flatpak meson flameshot libreoffice vlc picard conda btop gimp gnome-calendar gnome-software gnome-keyring-pam seahorse adw-gtk3-theme rofi gwenview perl-Image-ExifTool swayidle

sudo dnf copr enable lihaohong/yazi
sudo dnf install yazi fuse-sshfs trash-cli
ya pkg add uhs-robert/sshfs
ya pkg add yazi-rs/plugins:mount
ya pkg add uhs-robert/recycle-bin
ya pkg add AminurAlam/yazi-plugins:preview-audio
ya pkg add walldmtd/fs-usage

ghostty

sudo dnf copr enable scottames/ghostty
sudo dnf install ghostty

helium

sudo dnf copr enable imput/helium
sudo dnf install helium

Install the bitwarden extension and log in to https://vault.benjaynes.com

Follow this answer to remove password prompt when launching

vicinae

sudo dnf copr enable quadratech188/vicinae
sudo dnf install vicinae

Gnome Software Center

Apps to install with the gnome software center (flatpak but the software center puts them in the right place with desktop files and updates)

  • parabolic
  • planify
  • slack
  • localsend

nirimod

sudo dnf install python3-gobject

Install these packages if python3-gobject isn't enough:

sudo dnf install cairo-devel python3-devel
pip install pycairo

obsidian

sudo dnf install fuse fuse-libs

Use this guide to install the AppImage version of obsidian. After downloading will need to move the appimage to ./.local/bin/Obsidian-<>.AppImage and then create a desktop shortcut for it.

silent SDDM

cd ~/Repositories
git clone -b main --depth=1 https://github.com/uiriansan/SilentSDDM && cd SilentSDDM && ./install.sh
systemctl set-default graphical.target

awww

sudo dnf install wayland-devel libxkbcommon-devel lz4-devel wayland-protocols-devel

Follow these instructions to clone and build with cargo

swayosd

sudo dnf copr enable erikreider/swayosd
sudo dnf install swayosd

rofi extra configs

instructions

git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/adi1090x/rofi.git

cd rofi
chmod +x setup.sh

./setup.sh

Might install different fonts and change waybar

Add

to the script for chosen menu to get logout and lock to work with mangowm

mangowm

guide

sudo dnf install --nogpgcheck --repofrompath 'terra,https://repos.fyralabs.com/terra$releasever' terra-release

sudo dnf install mangowm

wgcf

Go to https://github.com/ViRb3/wgcf/releases and download amd64 for linux.

sudo dnf install wireguard-tools

Move downloaded file to /usr/bin

mv ./<name of downloaded file> /usr/bin/wgcf
wgcf register
wgcf generate

generated config needs to be moved

SwayNC

sudo dnf copr enable erikreider/SwayNotificationCenter
sudo dnf install SwayNotificationCenter

Tuxedo

Go to https://github.com/webstonehq/tuxedo and download the latest release, move it to

/usr/bin

Adding Configs

cd ~
git clone https://github.com/ben-jaynes/dotfiles.git
cd dotfiles

(remove any config folders in ~/.config/ that may have been autogenerated)

stow flameshot
stow ghostty
stow mango
stow niri
stow nvim
stow swaync
stow waybar
stow yazi

Dark Mode

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface color-scheme prefer-dark
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme adw gtk3-dark

Plymouth Fix

If the plymouth boot loading screen is not showing this fix may help:

sudo nano /etc/plymouth/plymouth.conf

Underneath "[Daemon]" add:

ShowDelay=0
DeviceTimeout=30
sudo dracut -qf

PAM Unlock Fix

Open seahorse without the default keyring unlocked (log in but don't enter password when prompted from git or gnome-calendar) and unlock from the app. Make sure to check "unlock with login" while doing this.

Install Fonts

cd ~/Downloads

# download font
wget https://github.com/ryanoasis/nerd-fonts/releases/download/v3.3.0/Hack.zip

# create local font directory and unzip the font
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/fonts
unzip -d ~/.local/share/fonts Hack.zip

# update the font cache
fc-cache -fv

# remove downloaded archive
rm Hack.zip

Idle Inhibit

using this: https://github.com/bdwalton/inhibit-bridge (for this run "go build" and then move binary to ~/.local/bin/) or could use this: https://github.com/ErikReider/SwayAudioIdleInhibit
